Kean University is a public, coeducational university, located in Union (main campus), which is a township in Union County, in the US state of New Jersey, with a population of over 54 000 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2000 census.
Kean was established in 1855 and first stared as Newark Normal School, with the initial mission to served as a techear-education college. It adopted its current name in September, 1997, when it achieved university status, after taking on the name Kean College of New Jersey, in 1973.
The university currently offers its students a total of 50 undergraduate majors and 37 graduate degree programs, through 6 colleges, which include the College of Business and Public Administration, College of Education and College of Visual and Performing Arts.
Kean's athletic teams are known as the Cougars and they compete in NCAA Division III, with 14 sports teams. Their distinctive colors are blue and silver.
